Direct Observation of Clinical Work

This is considered best practice and is often explicitly encouraged by regulators.

Includes

  • Video recordings (preferred)

  • Live observation or co-therapy (where appropriate)

  • Audio recordings (secondary option)

Why it’s crucial

  • Allows supervision to be based on actual practice, not recall

  • Supports accurate assessment of competence

Developmental Guidance Toward Full RCT Licensure

Supervision provides structured, supportive guidance to help new clinicians progress toward the competencies required for full registration as a Registered Counselling Therapist.

Includes

  • Clarifying licensure requirements and milestones

  • Supporting the transition from student/early clinician to independent practitioner

  • Building confidence, professional identity, and readiness for autonomous practice

  • Offering corrective guidance in a supportive, non-punitive way

Purpose

  • Ensures growth occurs safely and progressively

  • Reduces isolation and overwhelm in early practice

  • Aligns clinical development with regulatory expectations
